Zohran Mamdani and the New York City policy market

Most of the contracts that carry the mayor's name ask one kind of question in different words: has a named thing become law in New York City, and by what date. Kalshi's rent, tax, wage, child care and public safety listings each fix one qualifying act and one deadline, and most of those deadlines land on January 1, 2027. The millionaire tax contract resolves Yes if a law authorizing a new personal income tax bracket or surcharge on incomes over $1 million for New York City residents has become law by then, and the billionaires contract asks the same question at a $1 billion threshold. The wage contract needs a bill setting a minimum of at least $30 an hour for the city, effective in 2030 or earlier. A separate listing asks whether a law establishing or renaming an agency as the Department of Community Safety takes effect on the same clock.

The two largest contracts leave the legislative path behind. Polymarket's rent question does not turn on what the mayor announces: it asks whether the New York City Rent Guidelines Board sets a rent adjustment of zero for both one-year and two-year renewal leases on rent-stabilized apartments citywide, in effect by the end of December 2026, and it says outright that an announced intention, or an order blocked before it takes effect, does not qualify. Kalshi's grocery store question is blunter still and pays only if a New York City owned and operated grocery store opens to the public before January 1, 2028.

Current office and record

Mamdani was sworn in as Mayor of the City of New York on January 1, 2026, and the Office of the Mayor presents him as the 112th holder of that office. The position record gives the same start date with no end date entered against the term, has him win the office at the 2025 New York City mayoral election and succeed Eric Adams.

Before City Hall he sat in the New York State Assembly for the 36th district, which the mayor's office describes as Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway and Astoria Heights. That service runs from January 2021 to the end of 2025 in the same record, where he follows Aravella Simotas in the seat. His party affiliations are listed there as the Democratic Party, the Democratic Socialists of America and the Working Families Party.

What has moved the market

Every question on this page dates from one morning. Before January 1, 2026 the items on the mayor's agenda were campaign positions with no office behind them; from the swearing-in they became questions about what an administration does, each with a deadline attached.

The mechanism the Kalshi contracts name is a bill becoming law in New York City, and City Hall's own announcements show that mechanism working: a bill making year-round outdoor dining a permanent part of New York City was signed on August 31, 2026. The announcements published through September 4, 2026 name none of the specific acts the policy contracts require. They do cover a moratorium on generative artificial intelligence in schools on September 2, 2026 and a set of executive orders on September 11th remembrance and emergency preparedness on September 4, 2026, and one Kalshi listing prices that habit directly by asking whether the mayor signs an executive order inside a named week.

The child care contract is the one most easily confused with a state program. It reads on a law establishing and funding a universal child care program in New York City, and not on New York's universal pre-K expansion, which moves with the state budget.

What happens next

The clock on most of the Kalshi policy contracts runs to January 1, 2027, and the grocery store question runs a year past that. Polymarket asks the grocery store question on a much shorter fuse, with a December 31, 2026 date of its own, so the two venues are not asking the same thing even where the words look alike.

Two contracts read on the job rather than on any policy. Polymarket's tenure question resolves Yes if Mamdani ceases to be mayor of New York City for any period between taking office and the end of December 31, 2026, and an announced resignation or removal settles it immediately, whenever it would take effect. A Kalshi listing asks the narrower question of whether he announces a departure. Next review: October 4, 2026.

Other markets that name Zohran Mamdani

Several contracts price him outside City Hall, and none of them is a New York question. Polymarket asks whether he officially announces a run for U.S. President in the 2028 election by December 31, 2026, and treats the announcement itself as sufficient whether or not a nomination is ever filed. Another Polymarket listing asks whether he is the 2028 Democratic vice-presidential nominee, resolving on the first person formally nominated by the party who accepts, read from official party sources; a later replacement of the nominee does not change it.

Kalshi runs the 2029 mayoral re-election question on the same announcement logic, with an April 6, 2029 cut-off, and asks separately whether he endorses a candidate in any 2026 primary for public office outside New York, with a September 15, 2026 date.
