The Metropolitan Division picture

The Rangers closed 2025-26 at 34-39-9 for 77 points, last of the eight clubs in the Metropolitan Division. Carolina took the division at 53-22-7 and 113 points, a gap of 36. Six Metropolitan clubs finished above 90 points and the Rangers were the only one under 80; the nearest of them, New Jersey, ended 10 points ahead at 42-37-3. The Islanders, the state's other Metropolitan club, took sixth at 43-34-5 and 91 points.

That is the shape of the climb rather than a handicap: the table resets in October. It does say that five clubs the Rangers see most often, Carolina, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington and Columbus, all finished the last full season between 92 and 113 points.

Where the Rangers play

Madison Square Garden, in Manhattan, opened on February 11, 1968, and the Knicks play there as well. All 42 of the Rangers' home dates in 2026-27 are at the Garden, from the October 1 opener to the April finale. The other two New York State clubs in the league sit outside the city: the Islanders in Nassau County on Long Island, the Sabres in Erie County at the western end of the state.

The 2026-27 schedule

The season starts at Boston on September 29, 2026, and the Garden opens two nights later against Tampa Bay. The Islanders come to Manhattan on October 6 and again on February 12, 2027, and the Rangers go out to Elmont on December 20 and February 18. Buffalo visits on February 15, and the Rangers travel there on November 25 and March 6. The regular season ends at home against Toronto on April 10, 2027.

The calendar is close to even month by month, seven home dates in each of October, November, December, January and March. Two stretches break that pattern. A four-game western trip in November runs through Seattle, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, and February is the thinnest month at the Garden, four home dates against six on the road, with a four-game run that starts in Elmont and carries on to Philadelphia, Carolina and Washington.
