Four Yankee Errors Handed the Rays Game 2 and Left New York One Loss From Elimination

Polymarket had the Yankees at 4% to win the World Series on October 6, 2026, down from 10% before Game 2, which means the market now prices three straight wins over Tampa Bay as the first of several long shots.

The Yankees lost ALDS Game 2 to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 5, 2026, and four New York errors turned a close game into a 2-0 series deficit. Three of the five Tampa Bay runs were unearned, according to the MLB box score, and the Yankees now play Game 3 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on October 7 needing a win to stay alive in the best-of-five series.

As of October 6, 2026, the World Series board had absorbed the result: Polymarket had the Yankees at 4% to win the 2026 World Series, with Kalshi at 5%, down from 10% on both venues on October 5 before first pitch. The price says the market now treats the Yankees as a club that has to win three straight games against the team that has beaten them twice, and then two more rounds, rather than as a co-favorite in the American League.

How four errors decided ALDS Game 2

The game was lost in two innings, and the Yankees' own gloves were involved in both. In the bottom of the first, Yandy Díaz reached on a fielding error by third baseman Ryan McMahon. After a Jonathan Aranda single, Junior Caminero grounded into a force out, and a throwing error by second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. let Díaz score. Later in the inning, Liam Hicks reached when a Rays challenge overturned the call and charged catcher interference to Austin Wells. Tampa Bay led 1-0 without an earned run.

Ben Rice tied it with a solo home run to right field in the top of the fourth. The tie lasted one half-inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Aranda singled and Caminero doubled to center. Hicks grounded out to score Aranda, and Chandler Simpson reached on a fielder's choice that brought Caminero home. With two outs, Jonny DeLuca reached on a throwing error by shortstop George Lombard Jr., and Richie Palacios lined a single to center that scored Simpson and DeLuca. A 1-1 game became 5-1, and two of those four runs came after the inning should have ended.

Rice homered again in the eighth, his second solo shot of the night, which made it 5-2. That was the last run either team scored. Bryan Baker retired the side in order in the ninth for the save, as he had in Game 1.

Schlittler's start and the box score

Cam Schlittler took the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed six hits, four runs (two earned), one walk and two strikeouts on 76 pitches. The box score credits him with ten groundouts and no flyouts, a profile that asks a lot of the infield behind him, and the infield made three of the four errors.

The Yankee bullpen did its part after the fifth. Brent Headrick, John Schreiber, Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn and David Bednar combined for 3.2 innings with one hit and no earned runs. The offense did not answer. New York finished with four hits: Rice's two home runs, plus singles from Cody Bellinger and Austin Wells. Across the first two games of the series, the Yankees have scored two runs, both on Rice swings, after Game 1 ended 1-0 on October 3.

For Tampa Bay, Freddy Peralta went 4.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits. Cam Booser got one out in the fifth and was credited with the win, Ian Seymour covered three innings and gave up only Rice's second home run, and Baker closed. The game drew 40,226 and took three hours and two minutes, with first pitch at 8:10 pm ET.

What the World Series board prices now

Polymarket's Yankees price, from 10% on October 5 to 4% on October 6, 2026, is the clearest read of what Game 2 cost. On October 5, before first pitch, Kalshi and Polymarket both had the Yankees at 10% to win the World Series and the Rays at 14%. On October 6, 2026, Kalshi had the Rays at 19% and Polymarket had the Yankees at 4%. One night moved the two clubs in opposite directions on the board: the Rays now sit as the American League club the market rates most likely to win it all among those still playing, and the Yankees sit near the bottom of the remaining field.

The rest of the board puts that in context. On October 6, 2026, Kalshi had the Los Angeles Dodgers at 28%, Polymarket had the Milwaukee Brewers at 25%, and Polymarket had the Chicago White Sox at 10%. The White Sox lead their own Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians 2-0, with Game 3 in Chicago on October 7, and they are priced well above the Yankees. The difference between the two clubs is not talent on paper; it is which side of a 2-0 series each one is on, and the board treats that hole in a five-game series as a larger obstacle than an ordinary underdog matchup.

The Game 2 price itself shows how quickly the read changed. Before first pitch on October 5, both venues had the Yankees at 53% to win the game, a near coin flip with a slight New York edge. The game went the other way on plays that a moneyline does not price: a misplayed ground ball, two throwing errors and a catcher's interference call won on review.

The case for the Yankees, stated plainly

The strongest argument against Polymarket's 4% price on October 6, 2026, is that the next two games are at home. Game 3 and, if needed, Game 4 are at Yankee Stadium, and the Yankees swept the Boston Red Sox there in the Wild Card Series, 9-0 on September 29 and 9-2 on September 30. Max Fried, the scheduled Game 3 starter, had a 2.80 ERA over 112.2 innings and 20 starts this season with 104 strikeouts, per MLB's season statistics. A team with that starter at home is not a team the venues are pricing to be swept; the 4% price is mostly the cost of needing three wins in a row before the American League Championship Series even starts.

The other side of that argument is Tampa Bay's pitching. Nick Martinez, the Rays' scheduled Game 3 starter, went 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA over 180 innings and 31 starts. Across two games, Rays pitchers have allowed two runs. Nothing in the first two box scores suggests a staff that the Yankee lineup has solved. Game 1 was a 1-0 loss in which Drew Rasmussen held New York to one hit over eight innings, and Game 2 added four more Yankee hits. A lineup with five hits in two postseason games has to change course against a 15-game winner to make the home-field argument count.

What happens next

Game 3 is scheduled for 8:00 pm ET on October 7, 2026, at Yankee Stadium, with Fried facing Martinez. A Tampa Bay win ends the Yankees' season. A Yankees win forces Game 4 at Yankee Stadium on October 8, with Carlos Rodón listed as the Yankees' probable, and a Game 5, if necessary, returns to Tropicana Field on October 10. The American League Championship Series is scheduled to begin October 12, so a Yankees comeback would leave little rest between rounds.

The World Series board will move again after first pitch on October 7; the live prices sit on the New York World Series market page, which tracks every New York club in the field. The Yankees team page carries the club's other boards, and the Game 2 preview set out the stakes before first pitch. The rest of New York's playoff picture is on the sports hub.
