Eastern Long Island Has Answered This Question Three Times, and the Market Still Prices a Fourth Answer
NY-01 House race odds price eastern Long Island's congressional seat as a Republican hold, and what the price rests on is a record rather than a campaign: three consecutive general elections decided inside a single point of each other, and a partisan index that sits four points to the right of the country. The Clerk of the House lists Nick LaLota (Republican) as the member for the district, and Kalshi's Republican contract carries his name as its label. Both venues that price the seat put the Republican side ahead and both put it well below where that record alone would put it. The voters of Suffolk County's east end settle the question on November 3, 2026.
What the number is paying for, and what it is not
Start with the district rather than the board. As Ballotpedia's race page for the 2026 contest stood on September 4, 2026, it gave NY-01 a Cook Partisan Voter Index of R+4, which makes it the 206th most Republican seat in the country, and records a 2024 presidential result inside the district of 54.3% for Donald Trump against 44.3% for Kamala Harris. Those are the two numbers most often used to describe a district that leans one way without being out of reach.
The House results underneath them have been steadier than the presidential line. The seat went Republican 55.2% to 44.8% on November 5, 2024 on 410,100 votes, 55.5% to 44.5% on November 8, 2022 on 318,995 votes with no incumbent in the race at all, and 54.8% to 45.1% on November 3, 2020 on 375,116 votes under a different Republican member. Three cycles, three different sets of circumstances, and a winning share that has stayed between 54.8% and 55.5% throughout. All three results are certified.
The market does not price that. What the price is saying, on September 4, 2026, is that a district which has produced the same answer three times running is roughly three quarters likely to produce it a fourth time. The gap between a seat that has never been closer than ten points and a contract that has never traded above the mid seventies is the whole read: the number is not a forecast of this district in isolation, it is a forecast of this district minus whatever a national swing takes off it.
Where the forecasters disagree with each other
The four outlets Ballotpedia tracks have not moved this race since July 21, 2026, and they do not sit in the same place. The Cook Political Report and Inside Elections both carry NY-01 as Solid Republican, Sabato's Crystal Ball as Likely Republican, and Decision Desk as Lean Republican. Cook has held it at Solid Republican since February 11, 2025, the first entry in Ballotpedia's rating history for the seat.
That spread matters more than any single label. Solid, Likely and Lean are three different claims about competitiveness, and the distance between the most and least confident of them is close to the distance between the exchange price and the district's own history. A market trading in the low to mid seventies is trading inside the forecasters' disagreement rather than against any of them.
The dollars and the price point in opposite directions
Volume across the two venues reached $75.0K by September 4, 2026, and it does not sit where the price does. The Democratic contract has taken $44.0K of it and the Republican contract $31.0K, and the skew holds separately at each book. A field the market had put away would normally show the favored side absorbing the money, because that is the side people are willing to hold to settlement.
The recent tape says something narrower. On September 4, 2026 Kalshi had traded $362.00 on the Republican contract and $66.00 on the Democratic one over the previous 24 hours, and Polymarket's entire NY-01 event had turned over $198.10 in the same window, all of it on the Republican line. The lifetime skew was built early; the day-to-day flow is not rebuilding it.
The two venues are not quoting the same seat
Kalshi's Republican contract last traded at 75% on September 4, 2026 with a bid at 73% and an offer at 74%, while Polymarket had the same outcome at 72% inside a two-point spread. On the other side, Kalshi's Democratic contract fell from a previous print of 30% to 26% while Polymarket's held at 27%. Two to three points of daylight between two books is not a disagreement about eastern Long Island; it is what a two-point-wide market looks like when neither venue is being pushed.
Depth explains the rest, because there is very little of it. On September 4, 2026 Polymarket carried $3.8K of resting liquidity across the whole NY-01 event against $42.2K of lifetime turnover, and on the Kalshi Democratic contract the offer resting at 27% was for 50,706 contracts while the bid behind it was for 200. An order book that lopsided means the quote is set by whoever is standing there, which is not the same thing as a crowd agreeing on a number. Neither venue lists anything beyond the two major parties with a price or a trade behind it.
The case against the read
The strongest case against reading the volume skew as doubt is that this book is too quiet to carry the inference at all. Kalshi's two NY-01 contracts opened on January 7, 2026 and have carried a combined 24-hour tape under $500 on a normal day; Polymarket's resting liquidity is a small fraction of what has passed through it. In a market that thin, where the dollars sit records who arrived first and in what size, not what anyone believes on any given morning.
The same objection runs the other way on the fundamentals. Three results inside a point of each other are three results under three different national environments, and none of them is evidence about a fourth. A price in the seventies is not a claim that this district has changed; it is the ordinary discount any seat carries when the party defending it is also defending a national majority, and the forecaster who has the race at Lean Republican is making exactly that argument. On that reading the market and the district's history are not in conflict at all, and the volume skew is noise on top of a reasonable number.
What changes the read
October 24, 2026: voter registration closes and early voting opens, running through November 1 under the State Board of Elections political calendar for 2026. A district with a settled record and a quiet book either wakes up in that window or does not wake up at all.
A rating move: Cook, Inside Elections, Sabato's Crystal Ball and Decision Desk have all held NY-01 where it was on July 21, 2026. Any of the three most confident outlets moving toward Lean, or Decision Desk moving away from it, is the cleanest external signal that the read has broken.
The daily tape rather than the price: if the Kalshi book starts trading in size while the quote holds in the low to mid seventies, the lifetime volume skew was information. If the quote moves first and the volume follows it, the skew was staleness.
The certified candidate list: the State Board of Elections certified the offices on the November 3, 2026 ballot in an amended document dated July 31, 2026, with every congressional seat on it, but its certification of candidates is a separate document that this site has not obtained. This read is wrong if that list does not put the sitting member back on the Republican line.
November 3, 2026 and November 18, 2026: the count, and then the recanvass the state calendar sets a fortnight later.
When the NY-01 market resolves
Neither venue settles on a person. Kalshi's KXHOUSERACE-NY01-26 pair pays on the party of the House member sworn in for the term beginning in 2027, allows accelerated determination once a consensus of media organizations projects the winner, and carries a listed expiration of November 3, 2027 with settlement expected on January 4, 2027. Polymarket's NY-01 House Election Winner contracts pay on the party of the candidate who wins the seat, taking ballot-listed affiliation at the point the 2026 House elections are conclusively called, and fall back to official Federal Election Commission results where credible reporting is ambiguous. Each venue also lists a line for any other party, and neither carried a price or a trade on September 4, 2026. The candidate names Kalshi prints on its two contracts are labels; settlement reads the party and nothing else.

The mirror image of this seat sits upstate, where NY-21 is an open Republican district priced at almost the same level as this defended one. West along the island, NY-04 is the Nassau County seat that has changed hands twice while NY-01 has not moved at all. The politics board carries the rest of the state's contracts, the elections hub follows the November 3, 2026 calendar, and how to read a probability explains what a price in the seventies is and is not saying.
